Rail Projects
The brief: During 2021, WGP Digital were heavily involved with creating virtual tours for the rail industry. Two companies were involved, Leeps Consulting & Global Rail Construction.
LEEPS CONSULTING – This project involved creating virtual tours for enabling safe access to Network Rail Substations, in particular the safe access to their local control panels. The project consisted of creating virtual tours at the entrance point to a sub station and subsequent 360 view points to show the safe route to the local control panel, the tour was further enhanced with clickable information notes, images and custom mapping. A specific website was also created by WGP Digital along with videos showing the operation of LCPs.
Methodology: A canon 5d mk3 and wide angle lens was used to capture the 360 imagery, in my experience this is the best way to create high quality virtual tours, images were enhanced and stitched together in 360 software, the subsequent panoramic images were imported into powerful VT software to create the virtual tour. Training videos were created with a Panasonic Lumix, a professional sound studio was commissioned for the voice overs. For the mapping, Ordnance Survey data was purchased to form the base for custom mapping to help the operative locate the LCP, these were created using Autocad software.
Deliverables: Once the virtual tours, videos and mapping were complete a simple website was created to enable access.
GLOBAL RAIL CONSTRUCTION – This project also involved creating virtual tours for enabling safe access to Network Rail Substations, however in this case just the vehicular/pedestrian access. The project consisted of creating virtual tours at the entrance point to a sub station and to check the location description, three regions, approx. 80 access points in total and the challenge of finding them!. A specific website was also created by WGP Digital to help operatives to locate the access point safely.

Deliverables: Once the virtual tours were created a simple website was created with a link to each access point.
All our virtual tours are high quality and virtual reality ready, in these particular projects the emphasis was less on the image quality but the useable features and the tours have been reduced to 70% quality. Our virtual tours are highly suited to heritage projects were capturing high levels of detail is important as well as providing virtual visibility.
